It's always adventurous when Papa has a day off. What should we do? We spent a good deal of time looking on the computer for a perfect thing to do on a blustery cold day. Glass Factory Tour. Sounds great! So off we set, and when we finally arrived, we realized we had followed the wrong set of directions and taken half hour longer than was necessary. Oh well. We were too early for the tour time, so we drove a few miles up the road and admired the view from High Point. Then we were hungry. Shop Rite was next. Bagels, donuts, water... Oh, look, there's an Army Navy Store! After eating in the car and browsing through knives, army coats, etc. we got to the factory. In we went. There the lady, who I had spoken to on the phone and had neglected to tell me the details, informed us that the factory part of the tour was closed and it was only going to be outside. OUTSIDE? Bbbbrrrrrr. It was ten degrees Farenheit with 50-60 mile per hour winds. I don't think so... So we found a brochure and set off again. A half hour to the candy factory. I called the place. Yes, we will be doing a demonstration in about an hour or so. Okay. The chocolate was fun to look at and the candy laces had no corn syrup - that was good - but, no, we are not doing a demonstration today, actually. Okay. Three miles up the road is the pretzel factory. Phew... there, finally, was a demonstration. We watched in fascination as perfect little pretzels kept rolling off the belt, and we each picked a different flavor soft pretzel to eat. A little full of carbs by now, we rolled off towards home, car shaking from the gusts between the mountains. We'd been in three states so far, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania... boy, it was good to see the Deleware Gap again! Meanwhile, I pointed out interesting signs. Look, a trout hatchery, you can go inside and visit! Look, an outlook point with a beautiful view, that must be nice! Look, an International Foods Bakery, should we look? Hmm, there's a little historical museum up that way, I wonder what it's like. Oh wow, a candle making factory, maybe they have a demonstration! Troy's eyes never left the road, and the car didn't either. The only signs he read were the ones that said "New Jersey." Are you ignoring me, perhaps, honey?? I guess he lost his sense of adventure... He looked at me once and observed dryly, "Seems to me we've done things like this before... nice ride, though!" The kids all decided it had been fun to see the pretzels and it was even more fun when we spotted a Toysrus on the way home and dropped in for a quick look. Who said it wasn't fun to be adventurous?! The only adventure I could have done without was when we almost hit a car in front of us who stopped short. That has a way of bringing you up short. How we have to be kept day by day! Home sweet home... And do you know what the kids are saying? "That was fun, mom. Can we go skating tomorrow?!"
